How to Enjoy The LEGO Technic Idea Book Series

If you already own some quantity of LEGO Technic and MINDSTORMS parts:

1. Try to create as many models as you can with the parts that you already own.
2. If you find that you’re missing some parts, try to think of ways to substitute other parts for the ones that you’re missing.
3. If you can’t find a good substitute for a particular part, try to obtain that part on BrickLink using the following “LEGO Technic Idea Book Parts List” as reference.

If you have only a few LEGO Technic parts:

1. Buy some of the recommended sets listed in “LEGO Technic Sets I Recommend” section below.
2. Try to build as many models as possible using the parts in your new sets.
3. If you find that you’re missing parts, try to think of ways to substitute other parts for the ones that you’re missing.
4. If you can’t find a good substitute for a particular part, try to obtain that part on BrickLink using the following “LEGO Technic Idea Book Parts List” as reference.

LEGO Technic Sets I Recommend (December, 2010)

Honestly, it is hard to find LEGO Technic sets which include a good variety of parts. Most include the parts you’ll need in order to make a particular model, like a car or helicopter. In addition, the sets available in the USA differ from those in Japan, where I live.

Of the sets sold in the USA, I think the best set is #8043 (Motorized Excavator).

It’s slightly expensive, but it is worth a lot. It contains a motor, a remote control system, lots of gears.

Next, I recommend #8053 (Mobile Crane).

This set contains a lot of parts like gears, but it doesn't contain a motor. If you need a motor, I recommend set #8293 (Power Functions Motor Set).

Even if you purchase the above sets, you will still not be able to build all of the models in the books because there are hundreds of LEGO Technic parts. As with all creative LEGO building, if you find that you’re missing some parts, try to find substitutions. And above all, have fun!
